When you select your Medicare plan, should you choose Medicare Select? What the heck is Medicare Select??? Defined on page 20 of the Guide to Health Insurance for People with Medicare: Medicare Select is a type of Medigap policy only sold in certain states that may require you to use doctors and hospitals in their network in order to be covered. Unlike Medicare Advantage Plans or Part C, these Select Medigap plans do not require you to surrender your right to Original Medicare and may be a perfect fit for you.

One hint that you may be looking at a Medicare Select is if you see the word, "select" even though it looks fancy, it means what it means this time. You may also recognize your plan or one you are considering is "so and so" of Mississippi or "so and so" of -name your favorite state- These are not available in all states and are less expensive in some cases, but cost the same or more in others. As always, it is best to ask for the help of a professional who knows your state and knows your situation. There is no one size fits all... Let's see what fits you.
